Anxiety
In our society, we often focus on how to get rid of anxiety so we do not have to sit in the discomfort. While “getting rid of anxiety” may sound ideal, attempting to do so often makes the experience worse and may even intensify these unavoidable feelings and sensations. The more we try to push the anxiety away, the more our minds become consumed by the worry, rumination, and fear.
Our brains are wired to experience anxiety and potential “threats” as a means of survival. Therefore, rather than focus on how to get rid of those unpleasant feelings and sensations, our work together targets how to manage the anxiety more effectively and commit to actions aligned with your values. In doing so, you can learn how to acknowledge uncomfortable emotions as they arise and have the tools to still live more fully in the present. Individual therapy provides space to better understand our anxiety, practice acceptance, and develop practical skills, all while cultivating a life guided by what matters to you.
Body Image
In our appearance-based society driven largely by diet culture and pressure to conform to a certain body ideal, it can be hard to remain grounded in our own self-worth. We may easily slip into a shame spiral around how we feel in and about our bodies. These intrusive, punitive thoughts may take such a strong hold over us that they ultimately dictate our life’s choices, relationships, and overall quality of life. They may cause interference in our ability to function at work, school, and lead to increased feelings of anxiety and depression.
Individual therapy provides space to cultivate self-compassion and practice acceptance, by reconnecting with what truly matters to you in your life. In working together, I will support you in developing tangible skills so that these unpleasant body-focused thoughts and feelings loosen their grip on you. Together, we can focus on how to make peace with your body by living your life in accordance with your values.
Depression
Emotional pain is an inevitable part of the human experience. In our society, we are often encouraged to escape, avoid, or control emotions that arise in response to painful experiences. However, we often find that our attempts at controlling these emotions leads to prolonged experience of pain and suffering. No matter what we do to get rid of or control the pain, those feelings of worthlessness and despair often follow us and lead to further isolation, withdrawal, and loss of interest in things we once enjoyed.
In our work together, we can focus on how to develop a new relationship with the emotional pain and let go of the struggle with those difficult thoughts and feelings. My warm, open approach to therapy creates space for you to feel both connected and supported as you begin to heal. Together, we can find ways to compassionately reconnect with what matters to you in this life and commit to taking action that aligns with your values so you can live the life you want.
Eating Disorders
You can live a life free from your eating disorder. Eating disorders interfere with the ability to live your life fully in the present. They strip away connections with your self, with friends, family, and with what brings you joy in this life. They often consume the mind with thoughts around body shape and weight, leading toward unhealthy behaviors with and around food and eating. Eating disorders are rooted in concerns related to self-esteem, shame, self-worth, guilt, fear, inadequacy, and sense of belonging.
While living with an eating disorder may leave you feeling isolated, trapped and alone, please know that full recovery from an eating disorder is possible. Through your willingness and with my support, you can learn to find peace with food and your body and experience the freedom of recovery. Individual therapy provides the space to explore your relationship with food and body and process underlying feelings that contribute to the eating disorder. In our work together, you can begin reconnecting with your internal strengths and values while developing reliable and practical skills to help you live more in the present rather than dictated by the intrusive thoughts of the eating disorder. Ultimately, you can learn to connect with what truly matters to you in this life, build self-compassion, and take action that aligns with your values. I am here to help you through this healing journey.
